Sonia Jiménez is a choreographer whose work has come to define the landscape of contemporary psychological ballet in Mexico. A graduate of the National School of Classical and Contemporary Dance (INBA), she has spent most of her career with the National Dance Company of Mexico, progressing from dancer to choreographer. Her works have also been created for companies such as Danzarena and Ballet Teatro del Espacio. Jiménez is a recipient of Mexico’s prestigious Palmas de Oro Theatre Award for Best Choreography.
Her style may be described as dramatic contemporary dance with a strong modern influence. Jiménez focuses on the inner world of the individual, translating emotional conflict into a precise physical language of sharp, sculptural movement. Her choreography is built on contrasts: sudden stillness gives the way to explosive dynamism.
Her ballet Vértigo stands as a signature of this approach. Short and striking (9 minutes), set to music by her compatriot Arturo Márquez, the work — like her other notable creations (Fractal, Íntimo) — condenses a powerful emotional statement, making inner turmoil visible and almost tangible.
