Edgar Zendejas

A graduate of the National School of Fine Arts (INBA) in Mexico City, Edgar Zendejas continued his training in Montreal and completed internships with leading figures such as Maggie Marjan and at the Choreographic Development Center of the Théâtre National de Chaillot in Paris. He creates works at the intersection of physical theatre and contemporary dance. His career began with the renowned Canadian company O Vertigo, and today he collaborates with leading dance companies worldwide — from the São Paulo Ballet to the Korean National Ballet.

Zendejas’s choreographic language is an intense, exploratory form of contemporary dance. He often structures his works as visual installations, where dance, light, video, and costume are given equal weight. Known for his collaborative working method with dancers, he explores themes of gender identity and existential inquiry. Zendejas is the recipient of the Silver Medal at the International Ballet Competition in Varna and the Choreographic Award of the Arts Council in Montreal.

The production Déjà, created for the National Dance Company of Mexico, stands as a manifesto of his artistic philosophy. In this work, as in other key pieces such as In memoriam and Stillness, the idea comes first, while the body becomes the instrument through which it is materialized with utmost precision and expressive clarity.
