Tie Break First time in Russia

Founded as recently as 2016, Tie Break has been received rapturously from its very first steps. The company’s secret is simple and straightforward at the concept level, but almost impossible to implement practically. First, you choose a style of choreography that is entirely inappropriate for the classical stage — let’s say alternative street dance. Next, you need to select a crew of performers who are all absolute masters of their art, but also absolutely different in their personal style — dancers from entirely different ethnic backgrounds, for example. Finally, you’ll want to carefully shred all the standard stage genres — whether that be comedic mime, jazz musicals, or circus shows — and mix them all together to produce an entirely new and original form. That’s all it takes to find your niche, and success is guaranteed. And guaranteed it is for Tie Break, who continue to wow critics and audiences throughout the world. Even the most inveterate ballet snobs tap their feet and thrill to somersault after dizzying somersault, each one not simply a trick but a separate phrase in a coherent and highly entertaining choreographic text. All eight of Tie Break’s members are veterans of their complex art, with fifteen years of experience in the legendary hip hop company Pockemon Crew, the first to take breakdance from the streets of Lyon to the stage of Opéra National de Lyon and other major concert halls. Their experience with the company not only molded them as dancers, but also inured them to all the vicissitudes of life as performers — the endless tours, the international competitions, the victories and the recognition. But then it became apparent that they needed to develop further. Four of the talented members — Moncef Zebiri, Patrick M’bala (Bboy Wazz), Nagueye Mahmoud (Bboy Niggaz) and Farès Baliouz — decided not just to form a separate company, but to build their own entirely unique street dance theatre. That was what lead to Tie Break and to a new avenue of hip hop performance. One of their most amazing features is their constant improvisation on stage, which aligns them both with breakdance and with jazz. Their irrepressible energy, artistic freedom, and urge to astonish attract the most varied audiences, from teenagers to academics. However, they see the purpose of their work not as entertainment but as a demonstration that any genuinely skilled artistic performance has the right to its own page in world history, even if it has its roots in the working-class districts of major cities. And they really are changing people’s attitudes to hip hop, performing on the stages of leading theatres and collaborating with pillars of the cultural community in France and elsewhere. Tie Break compel us to look afresh not just at their genre of dance, but at a whole layer of alternative culture that has long gone unacknowledged by official institutions. Furthermore, as well as selling out venues all over the world, they also actively collaborate with schools and festivals, using their spectacular stunts to engage young people with dance and the theatre. These young people then copy them, practicing incredible combinations of moves and tricks. And that’s surely better than spending endless hours slumped over a gadget, trying to shoot a virtual tank, isn’t it?

«Introdans» — it’s a unique phenomenon in the world of dance.

Crazy, irrepressible, quick, they are extremely different in different pieces.

Dance Open 2019: Masters, choreography by Nils Christe, Hans van Manen, Cayetano Soto

Introdans

Introdans has a relatively short history, but today it is already one of the three leading companies in the Netherlands. Since the foundation its mission was straight and clear: to introduce modern choreography to the largest possible public. In 1971 Ton Wiggers, a recent graduate of Arnhem Dance Academy, and Hans Focking, an owner of a theatre agency, founded the ballet working group Studio L.P. that was the predecessor to Introdans. At first, the company had serious problems with funding because The Municipality of Arnhem didn’t understand why the city should need its own dance company. They didn’t believe in the company’s success. For this reason, in 1970s Ton Wiggers began to create educational activities for school children and ballet amateurs in order to finance their performances. It took many years of hard work for the company to prove its viability, and as late as in 1979 the group finally received public and municipal grants for its projects. In 1980 the founders even threatened to dissolve the troupe, and after that, the funding became permanent. These new opportunities allowed Ton Wiggers to attract guest choreographers: external influence was extremely important for the artistic development of the company. In 1980s Introdans has employed such famous choreographers as Nils Christe, Ed Wubbe and Hans Tuerlings. Thus, the Introdans took the lead in the list of the country's dance companies and in 1984 received Theatre Critics’ Award for the innovative role it played on the Dutch ballet scene. Nowadays Introdans company continues to move forward, sets new objectives and achieves new results. Today the company works with such established choreographers as Robert Battle, Regina van Berkel, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, Lucinda Childs, Nils Christe, Jiří Kylián and Hans van Manen. It is interesting to note that Introdans has its own unique vision of dance performance: there is no distinct division between stars and corps-de-ballet, no primary and secondary roles on the stage. In each part different dancers take leading roles according to their plastique characteristics. Today Introdans is represented by two dancing troupes. The Introdans repertoire includes only one-act ballets — be it expressive compositions without a story or narrative performances taking a form of classical ballets paraphrases which were a starting point for the dance company many years ago. The Introdans literally means “introduction to dance”. Every year the ensembles give numerous performances in Netherlands and tours worldwide. Thus, they gain international popularity and become one of the most important ambassadors of the Dutch dance in the world. These two dance troupes perform their shows on the world's leading stages, such as the Broadway stage (New-York, USA), the Bangkok's International Festival of Dance and Music (Thailand), also they gave concerts in South Africa, Argentine, and took part in the Edinburgh International Children's Festival (Great Britain), the Dance Festival Steps in Switzerland, etc. The company works under the patronage of Her Royal Highness Princess Margriet and often accompanies the Royal House during state visits. But the Introdans founders are sure that dance is not only the language of international communication, but also the language that helps to bridge generations. Their incredible and fascinating shows attract adults as well as children and youth. The company proposes an educational interactive program which encourages everyone to discover the world of ballet dance.

Dance Open 2019: Alice, choreography by Mauro Bigonzetti

Tobias Ehinger and Xin Peng Wang about ballet Alice

Ballett Dortmund

The unique mixture of classics and modernism, acrobatic technique and virtuoso dances breaking the laws of physics and gravitation…In the recent decades a small modest company without extreme funding is so quickly developing that it’s frequently called a «Dortmund miracle». This miracle appeared due to the Chinese choreographer Xin Peng Wang, Dortmund’s ballet director since 2003. He studied choreography at the Beijing Dance Academy and modern dance at Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen (a cradle of contemporary German choreography). He has been working as a freelance choreographer worldwide: at the Hong Kong Ballet, National Ballet of China, Contemporary Dance Festival in New York, Dresden Ballet, Dutch National Ballet, Royal Flanders Ballet, as well as at many others. Xin Peng Wang may be considered a genuine wizard. Otherwise, Mauro Bigonzetti’s Alice would not have happened with his company. The extraordinary Italian choreographer preaches that the human body is a source of infinite opportunities and he expects the same from the dancers he works with. One should be a bit crazy and very passionate in order to perform his choreographies insightfully and brilliantly. Over the past few years, Dortmund Ballet has also worked with such choreographers as William Forsythe, Hans van Manen, Alexander Ekman, Douglas Lee, Christian Spuck, Edwaard Liang, Benjamin Millepied, Demis Volpi, Jiří Bubeníček. All these names prove how talented the company is.

Zurich Ballet

The Zurich company is pleasing, able, harmonious.

The company is a feast for the eyes.

Dance Open 2019: Winterreise choreography by Christian Spuck

Ballett Zürich

The Ballett Zürich has succeeded to become one of the most remarkable Swiss dance companies and to gain an international popularity due to the smart policy of the Swiss choreographer Heinz Spoerli who had been heading the company since 1996 up to 2012. Since 2013 the Ballett Zürich is guided by a German choreographer Christian Spuck. From his first days in the company, Spuk formulated his main goal as to attract the young audience. Step by step, his efforts started to bear fruit, and the ballet was no longer perceived as an “old-fashioned entertainment for wealthy people”. Today the young spectators visit the company more and more often: it’s very important for them to have a choice between classic productions and contemporary performances. A special pricing and different educational activities in collaboration with schools and institutions also help to build the young audience. Under the direction of Christian Spuck the company continues to tread new artistic paths by cultivating innovative choreographic techniques. Pieces by renowned choreographers as William Forsythe, Paul Lightfoot & Sol León, Douglas Lee, Martin Schläpfer, Jiří Kylián, Wayne McGregor, Marco Goecke, Ohad Naharin and Mats ensure that the company’s repertoire remains stylistically varied and interesting. The Zürich company is especially famous for its balanced combination of classical traditions and abstract language of contemporary dance. Also the company is famous for the technical and professional skills of dancers, their amazing abilities to work in different dancing styles and to meet the requirements of the most demanding star choreographers. The company includes more than fifty ballet dancers: many of them are the representatives of the Russian ballet school. The Ballett Zürich performs its shows on the world's leading stages, participates in different international festivals and the biggest events of the dance world.
