Alexandrinsky Theatre

It has always been an honour for every artist to perform on stage of the Alexandrinsky Theatre.

The history of the theatre dates back to the decree of empress Elizabeth signed on 30 August 1756, where she ordered to establish the first Russian professional drama company. It is considered that the Russian Theatre was founded on that day and its birthplace, the Alexandrinsky Theatre, celebrates its 260th season this year.

The contemporary history of the theatre is linked to the name of its current artistic director, Valery Fokin, the people’s artist of Russia. In August of 2014 the theatre received the official status of national treasure. That is why the Alexandrinsky, the flagship of the contemporary theatre culture and the historical symbol of the Russian theatre, is particularly careful when choosing its partners.

Dance Open and the Alexandrinsky Theatre have been working together for the 6th year in a row. Today our partnership is a tradition that indicates high artistic values of both sides. According to the theatre, what we have in common is the same approach to the artistic repertoire that combines the classics with brave experimental projects of young artists as well as various educational programmes.

In 2011 Dance Open debuted on the stage of the Alexandrinsky Theatre with a series of concerts devoted to classical Russian choreography school. In the subsequent seasons the festival presented here both classics and avant-garde works that represented the new trends in ballet. In 2014 the Alexandrinsky Theatre became a real “house” for Dance Open where all the performances of the festival took part. In 2015 the most important events of the festival, including the final gala, were presented there. In the 15th Anniversary Season all the admirers of the festival will again get together on the Ostrovsky Square from where they could continue enjoying the world ballet of the highest level for 5 nights in a row.

This year all the concerts and performances of the festival will again take part at the same stage – the Alexandrinsky Theatre will house Dance Open ballet festival once again. For us collaborating with such a professional team has always been an honour and pleasure.
